The logo for Your Story and a Flashlight was created by a friend of mine who is a graphic designer. It is a representation of the Celtic symbol, Awen or Three Rays of Light. It is pronounced as “ah-when”, “ou-when”, or “ah-oo-en”. In Welsh the word is translated as flowing spirit or flowing inspiration. Traditionally it it is made up of three circles, three dots and three rays of light pointing down
There are several meanings to the Awen Celtic symbol. The three outside lines are symbolic of:
~ The balance of masculine and feminine
~ Creation
The three rays of light have different meanings as well:
~ Three divisions of the soul (mind, body, and spirit)
~ The three realms we inhabit (land, sea and sky)
~ Love, Wisdom and Truth
~ Nature, knowledge and truth
Since there are so many different interpretations of this ancient symbol I thought I would add my own. I like the Welsh translations, “flowing Spirit or flowing inspiration.” To me this is the purpose of Spiritual Direction:
~ Learning to pay attention to the continuous or smooth and graceful movement of the Spirit/Jesus/essence/higher power/divine in a person’s life and world.
The three dots symbolize the three personas present during a Spiritual Direction session
~ The Spirit/Jesus/essence/higher power/divine.
~ The directee
~ The director
The three rays of light represent:
~ The Light or Grace that leads the director and directee along the path.
~ The diversity of perspectives that each of us needs to navigate the expedition of life
The circle flows out of and back into the middle dot. This signifies:
~ That the journey itself and the participants are surrounded by and infused with love.
