Perspective

Mark Terrell

One of the most memorable talks in my training to be a Spiritual Director happened during an unplanned interview with a Jesuit Priest.

I noticed this guy sitting off to the side while the professor was giving his lesson. I had no idea who he was or even why he was there. At some point in the lesson, I don’t even remember what the professor was talking about, this guy in the corner speaks up, “Well that is one perspective. Another point of view is that everything is grace. Everything is a gift. What is the point of grace in a particular situation?” At this point in the lecture the professor stops his original plan and invites the guy up for an impromptu interview. I am not sure what else he said but what stood out was his demeanor as he was being interviewed.

As the man kept talking, I witnessed someone who seemed free and full of joy. There was a lightness and an authenticity to him that I had never witnessed in anyone before. I wondered if this charisma, demeanor, and genuineness had something to do with his perspective of, “Everything is grace. Everything is a gift.” It was at that point I decided to try to see and live in the world with this perspective, “Everything is grace. Everything is a gift.”

My life has been remarkably better ever since.

What perspective of life do you live by? How does it inform how you interact in your everyday life and the world?
